Past: Between January 6th, 2003 and April 10th, 2003, IRB-01 offered over 35 different research-related HIPAA training sessions. All Investigators were required to attend one of those training sessions, and other study personnel were strongly recommended to attend. Click here to view the letter from Dr. Phillips and Dr. Iafrate about mandatory HIPAA training. Prior to June 2004 only Investigators were required to undergo HIPAA training. Others participating in research (e.g. research nurses, support staff preparing IRB or research paperwork, students assisting in the study, etc) were not required to complete training, but were strongly encouraged. Effective 6/10/2004 everyone participating in research (including but not limited to the principal investigator, sub-investigators, study coordinator, and staff/students preparing research paperwork or collecting data) must complete the "HIPAA for Researchers" training. Present: Effective in January 2005, everyone participating in research (including but not limited to the principal investigator, sub-investigators, study coordinator, and staff/students preparing research paperwork or collecting data) must not only complete the initial "HIPAA for Researchers" training, but they must also renew this training every two years. Since most of our researchers initially completed this training prior to the implementation of HIPAA (4/14/03), you will be required to renew your training no later than 4/13/2005. PLEASE NOTE: this training is research specific, and is in addition to any training that Shands, UF, or the VA requires you to complete for your clinical duties. NOTE 1: IRB-01 will not review new research studies if the principal investigator has not been completed training. NOTE 2: There is more than one required form of HIPAA Training.
