New Policy Announcement

Effective Immediately:

Certain categories of research conducted by Health Science Center personnel (Gainesville) may now be reviewed by IRB 02.  Principal Investigators may now select IRB 02 to review some research based on the type of research rather than the home college of the researcher.  UF still encourages Investigators to submit industry sponsored clinical trials not conducted at the VA to WIRB for review (see http://irb.ufl.edu/wirb/ for more information).

Please refer to the following table to determine which IRB can review your research.

Types of research reviewed Examples of research that CANNOT be submitted to this IRB

IRB 01
Gainesville HSC
http://irb.ufl.edu/irb01/

This IRB accepts and reviews all protocols submitted including the broad category of 'Medical' research.

·   Projects previously approved and conducted under another UF IRB.

·   Projects disapproved by another IRB.

IRB 02
Gainesville Campus
http://irb.ufl.edu/irb02/index.html

Limited to social, behavioral, educational research and other studies that involve survey research.

If any component of the research involves:

· Drug and device clinical trials

·   Other treatment related projects (surgical, physical therapy, etc)

·   Tissue/Data Banks

·   Projects that involve the utilization of VA employees, resources or patients

·   Projects that use or disclose Protected Health Information (PHI) from a covered entity, which requires compliance with HIPAA privacy regulations. Are you unsure if your project is covered by HIPAA? Contact Michael Scian at 846-3131 or scianmp@ufl.edu.

·   Projects previously approved by and conducted under another UF IRB

·   Projects disapproved by another IRB

IRB 03
Jacksonville HSC
http://www.hscj.ufl.edu/irb/

This IRB accepts and reviews all protocols submitted including the broad category of 'Medical' research.

·   Research that involves the utilization of VA employees, resources or patients

·   Research conducted by Gainesville faculty/staff/students that does not include Jacksonville as a site

·   Research previously approved and conducted under another UF IRB

·   Research disapproved by another IRB

Limited to industry sponsored trials involving FDA regulated drugs or devices.  Required for COM faculty and staff, recommended for other colleges.

·   Non-therapeutic research

·   Tissue/Data Banks

·   Research that involves the utilization of VA employees, resources or patients

·   Research supported by the GCRC

·   Research previously approved and conducted under another UF IRB

·   Research disapproved by another IRB

To summarize the new policy: Principal Investigators at the Gainesville Health Science Center may now choose to use either IRB 01 or IRB 02 for previously unsubmitted/unreviewed survey research provided it meets the criteria listed above. IRB 01 will review all research that is submitted. If IRB 02 determines that it does not have the requisite expertise to review a particular protocol then they will forward the submission directly to IRB 01. Should this occur the investigator will be required to revise the submission based on IRB 01's policies and using IRB 01 forms. Projects that have already been approved at or submitted to IRB 01 must continue to be reviewed there.
